Gout is a medical condition marked by episodes of acute inflammatory arthritis. A gout flare often causes a joint to become red, swollen, tender, and extremely painful, most commonly at the base of the big toe. It develops when excess uric acid in the bloodstream forms crystals that deposit in the joints, tendons, and surrounding tissues. Certain foods and medications can increase uric acid levels and trigger attacks. Diagnosis is confirmed by identifying microscopic crystals in joint fluid, and these may also form visible deposits under the skin known as tophi.
The condition can sometimes be missed, especially if uric acid levels are checked after a flare has settled. While many people have elevated uric acid, not all develop gout. During an attack, medications can provide relief—often within 24 hours. Colchicine is commonly prescribed and works best when taken early, though higher doses may cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are also used to reduce pain and inflammation. For those with recurring attacks, long-term medications to lower uric acid levels may be recommended, with treatment tailored to each patient.
Managing gout long-term requires lifestyle adjustments. Reducing foods high in purines—such as red meat, certain seafood, and alcohol (especially beer)—is important. Maintaining a healthy weight and following your treatment plan consistently can significantly improve outcomes. Gout is also linked to conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and heart or kidney disease. It may run in families and is uncommon in children.
